For The Love Of Lavender!

Thinking of lavender evokes images of glorious French fields of color and indeed the name lavender is derived from the flower. Lavender in interior design is a color that is not shy to make itself known; yet it can also sit demurely by, serving merely as a neutral to bolder, more assertive colors. To decorate with lavender takes a certain courage, a leap beyond the norm; on the other hand, maybe you just plain love the color and can't imagine that everyone else doesn't also.

Lavender is a child of violet, sister to purple, plum and magenta and is kissing cousins with shades of gray, blue and pink.  True lavender or floral lavender is in tone a medium violet. The color has long been associated with elegance, gentility and grace.  Lavender in combination with pink is extremely feminine. When combined with blue it suggests a cool sophistication, while it is warmed when combined with red. For a more contemporary, masculine or earthy palette combine it with brown, beige or navy.

Lavender can be extremely chic when used properly and adds visual excitement even when used sparingly. It works well as an accent color and serves equally well as a focal point in a room. While lavender can be delightfully refreshing it is easy to for it to lose its charm when used too boldly as it runs the risk of becoming vulgar and overly ostentatious. That being said, many a beautiful room has been created using a free hand with lavender! You decide!
